Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act

FERPA

federal law that protects the privacy of student education records and gives parents and eligible students certain rights with respect to education records, including under certain circumstances rights of inspection and review and generally, the right to consent to the disclosure of these records.

Federal law that applies to schools, universities, and colleges

Rights [ability to review records, ability to correct mistakes, ability to opt-out (opt-in — default), at 18, FERPA rights transfer from parents to student, doesn’t require schools to release records]

Directory Information [student identifiers, name, grade level, photograph]

Accumulated Data [grades, learning disabilities, special needs information, disciplinary records]
